7 Ways To Make The Most of Working Remotely!

MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER WITH THE SOLUTIONS YOU NEED DELIVERED!

Millions of workers are now working remotely from home and that can be a fun change or a bit of a challenge. We here at The Spectrum Post wanted to let you know we are here to help you get through this and other ensuing adjustments as we all learn to pivot in how we do business. Working remotely can be a wonderful way to slow down and reconnect with family and friends. You can feel more productive, less stressed without your daily commute, more creative and inspired. There are some challenges as well to working remotely. Here are some tips to help you make the most of working remotely before you  return to the office.

1. BOUNDARIES

Make sure anyone else in your living environment understands the “Do Not Disturb Rule”. This can be one of the biggest challenges when it comes to working remotely. You will need to make it very clear to everyone that you are not available during “Work Hours” just as if you were at your normal working location and then you need to stick to it yourself, which brings us to our next tip.

2. DISTRACTIONS

When you work remotely it is very easy to become distracted by a wide variety of things. This is where self-discipline is a major success factor. When you find yourself becoming distracted, remove the offender from your environment. One trick that is very effective is to actually schedule time on your calendar for the offending distraction. It results in an internal calm because you know that it will be addressed at a specific time and that frees you on an internal level to re-focus on your work.

3. WORK-SPACE

IIf you do not already have a dedicated work-space at your new remote site, you will need to set one up. It is VERY important to your success that its location be mutually negotiated with any others in your remote location (e.g. home, shared apartment, etc.). This needs to be your space for the time you are working there, and you need complete freedom to do what you need to during work hours as long as it does not interfere with others also in your location.

4.  KEEP IT CLEAN

Not only for health reasons, but also so you can find things. Make a point at the end of each day to file away any papers even if it is in a box for the moment. Disinfect and wipe down your computer, phone, and work-space. At the end of the day make sure everything is clean and neatly put away. There is a specific reason for this and that brings us to our next point.

5. ISOLATION

Keeping your work environment clean and inviting is a key factor in helping you to successfully work remotely. It also helps to reduce potential friction with others in your living and/or remote work environment. But there is one more factor and that is that at some point a sense of isolation will set in, especially if you are used to working in a bustling environment with multiple coworkers. Here are a few ways to help you adjust.

As we said, keep your work space neat, clean, organized, and inviting. Having a plant nearby is a huge plus. It helps to generate fresh oxygen, filter the air, and studies have shown plants boost cognitive function and creativity.

Take a short break (10 minutes max) every hour or two to get up, walk around, get a drink of water, make phone calls outside in the fresh air if possible. If you have a day with lots of calls strap on your running shoes, grab your tech, and go for a walk or run while you make your calls.

6. STAY CONNECTED

In particular, with your co-worker and colleagues. They are going to be experiencing what you are and this is the perfect time to strengthen work relationships. We highly recommend video chat over email. If you are needing documentation of your communication videos can be recorded and then sent via email to all parties.  We have posted some links below to some of our favorite communication tools that we have been using for years and highly recommend if you don’t have something in place already.

It is vital that you reach out regularly to your customers and clients. This is definitely an opportunity for you to strengthen your connection with them. Very personalized emails at regular intervals is key.  They need to know you are still in business and ready to meet their needs. Your consistency will feel reassuring to them at a very unsure time and that is golden!

7. KEEP YOUR MORNING ROUTINE

Go to bed at your normal time. Get up at your normal time. Get dressed like you would for a normal work day. Do everything you would normally do on a work morning minus the actual commute. This kind of transition is very similar to the effects of jet-lag if you don’t keep your body clock and routine as normal as possible. Keeping a normal routine can also be comforting if you are experiencing any apprehension or anxiety.
