Many people think that an entrepreneur is someone who operates alone, overcoming challenges and bringing her or his idea to market through sheer perseverance and tenacity. The simple truth is that almost no one has ever achieved anything worthwhile without creating key business relationships. To be successful in business, you need to connect, collaborate, and delegate. Finding ways to meet with people in the real world and build business relationships is becoming ever more important in the digital age. While in some industries it’s possible for employees to limit their communications to email and, if they wish, avoid interacting with colleagues (and their managers), that’s not possible for entrepreneurs, since relationships built on trust are vital to doing business. 


Spend Time With Like-minded Business Relationships

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak, the Apple co-founders turned their personal vision into reality with the help of trusted, talented teams. How did he and his people come up with their ideas and solve the technological and design problems they encountered as they developed new Apple products? By spending time together.  As Steve once said “Creativity comes from spontaneous meetings, from random discussions. You run into someone, you ask what they’re doing, you say ‘Wow,’ and soon you’re cooking up all sorts of ideas.”

If you are a business leader or entrepreneur and you or your team are primarily working from home or locations other than the office, keep watch to make sure that you are collaborating.  You or your employees should not be just a list of email addresses or instant-messaging contacts. If you need to jump-start your team, conferences and outrageous video parties can help people get to know each other and find creative solutions to problems. It is also quite probable that one of your staff may have a business relationship of their own that could prove valuable to your business and provide the solution to your current need.


Look for Opportunities to Create New Key Business Relationships

To achieve your goals, you need to be on the lookout for the opportunity to make connections wherever you go. Welcome chance encounters and opportunities to dream up outlandish plans. The person with the skill set you need to get your new business idea off the ground may be on your favorite social media stream or doing many of the same things you do or enjoy (within Covid-19 Guidelines for course). Go say hello. Your new business relationship may begin with someone who shares your passions or wants to solve the same frustrations you do. Turn Key Business Relationships into a Business Cluster

First, take stock of your own business. Ask yourself what is it that you do and what can you offer another small business owner? The type of business you own and the product or service your offer usually will often be complimentary with another business’s product or service. Let me give you an example of what I mean.

Let’s say that you have a men’s clothing store. Your target clients tend to be young up and coming business executives. What you sell the most in your store is medium priced suites in the $3-500.00 range, dress shirts, upper-end ties, and nice casual Friday office/golf ware. Chances are that your customer will also need a nice briefcase, smartphone, comfortable dress shoes, a great place for a haircut, etc. These are all your potential business cluster partners.
